The last carnival parade was in 1985. After this year's stunning success organisers say they are dedicated to making it an annual event.

Committee chairman Ian Barton said: "The police have said there were 10,000 people. It's the biggest success that Oakengates has ever had – and long may it continue."

He thanked committee members, the town council, the police and everyone who had been involved.

There was barely room to move along the streets as people crowded to wave at more than 20 floats full of people decked out in colourful costumes.

Themes ranged from retro to regal, with steel drums, cheerleaders and dancers keeping everyone entertained.

The fun continued in Hartshill Park where the procession led the way through the stalls, games and displays.

Spirits soared sky high when the RAF Falcons Parachute team and an RAF Spitfire made a spectacular flyover.

And music was provided by Robbie Williams and Olly Murs tribute acts.

MP David Wright joined in the fun on Saturday after launching Dawley Day.

He said: "I grew up in Oakengates, so attending Oakengates Carnival is special for me.

"I want to say a big thank-you to all those who work so hard to put on these events and bring our communities together."
