The refurbishment work will take place on the bridges – Ketley East, Ketley West and Dawley Road – on the M54 at junction 6 Ketley Interchange.

The Highways Agency said the work will start on Monday and will take around 40 weeks, during which time the M54 and local roads will be subject to carriageway or lane closures with diversions in place.

Officials have pledged that the maintenance work will be carried out as quickly as possible and any delays to motorists will be kept to a minimum.

Colin Jackson, for the Highways Agency, said: "The majority of the work will be carried out in daylight hours but some aspects of the scheme, such as the setting out of traffic management and installation of bridge props will be done at night."

Single lanes will be running in both directions between junctions five at Telford Town Centre and seven at Wellington from 8pm on Sunday until 6am on Monday.

The M54 westbound will be closed overnight between junction five at Telford Town Centre and junction seven at Wellington on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

It will then be closed eastbound between junction seven at Wellington and six at Ketley on Friday and Saturday. The westbound lanes will be closed again on Sunday August 4 between these two junctions. These closures are to install fixed traffic management to comprising narrow lanes.

The A5223 Ketley East bridge will be closed for around eight weeks while the A5223 Ketley West will be closed for up to a month. The Dawley Road bridge in Arleston will be closed for 12 weeks, although no date has yet been announced.

Motorists will be diverted along the A5223, Holyhead Road, Watling Street and Bennetts Bank B5061.
