Eric Shingler, 84, and Ken Treherne, 81, came up with the idea of transforming a disused summer house into a free bar at Coton Hill House in Berwick Road, Shrewsbury.

It has been stocked up with beers, lagers, wines and sherry and a variety of soft drinks.

'Ye Ole Coton Arms' will operate during the summer months and is part of a wider makeover for the home's garden, which has seen new plants put in and the creation of a barbecue area.

The work has been taking place this month, and the site was given an official opening when residents also enjoyed a barbecue.

Alison Gough, manager at Coton Hill House, said: "Our summer house is the size of an average shed and wasn't used.

"We have a couple of likely lads, who are members here in their 80s, who were up for some fun and made the suggestion. We have cleared it out and have stocked the bar with beer, lager, wine and sherry. It will be free of charge for the residents."
