Shropshire couple's little monsters plan Dracula wedding

When Kathy Millerchip pictured her dream wedding, thoughts of Halloween and Count Dracula couldn't have been further from her mind.

But what the Shropshire mother-of-two didn't know was that her own little monsters were hatching a plan.

And instead of walking down the aisle in a flowing white gown, Kathy, 37, and her bridegroom Kerry, 43, from Whitchurch, were married in a haunted house. While dressed as Mr and Mrs Dracula.

And the main food for guests was pizza, while the wedding cake was a gruesome sponge affair covered in eyeballs, spiders and blood, created specially for the occasion by Nicola Docksey, who runs Tuesday's Chocolates, in Market Drayton.

The extraordinary wedding was planned to the last detail by Kathy and Kerry's children Charlie, 12, and Holly, 10, after the cheeky youngsters applied to popular BBC children's show Marrying Mum and Dad.

The show sees presenters Ed Petrie and Naomi Wilkinson help kids make all the big decisions about their parents' wedding day, including the theme, venue, outfits and entertainment.

Charlie and Holly even had a hand in the baking the cake, which Nicola Docksey described as "really quite gruesome".

The resulting wedding spectacular is being shown next week, and just like the theme for the day it promises to be a scream.

Mrs Millerchip said: "I think it's safe to say nobody will ever have a wedding like ours, it was truly unique – certainly a day to remember.

"I actually married Count Dracula, making me Mrs Dracula. And we wore complete costumes, including fangs, which I had to take out while saying my vows so I didn't dribble!

"My costume was quite nice, I quite liked it really but my other half looked awful which was really funny. He looked like he had aged about 20 years. With grey hair he looked really old.

"But it was a spectacular day and the children absolutely loved it.

"Charlie was a little Dracula and Holly was a witch. The pair have quite an imagination."

Mrs Millerchip described the wedding as a "whirlwind" as Charlie and Holly only applied to appear on the show three months ago.

"We did not think we would get on in a million years," she said.

"The BBC came around and took some casting tapes, they said they liked us so they came out for a second and then a third visit.

"Within three months it had all come together and neither Kerry nor I had a say in any of it. Both Charlie and Holly organised it all with the help of the production team.

"The children came up with the ideas and the crew helped them fulfil them."

The ceremony took place on April 27 at Plas Teg, in North Wales, which is said to be one of the UK's most haunted houses.

Mrs Millerchip said: "The BBC put us up in a bed and breakfast the day before and we woke with absolutely no idea what was going to happen. We then found the day had a Halloween feel and we were getting married as Mr and Mrs Dracula.

"It was one surprise after another but we had lots of fun and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Everything about it was amazing."

Viewers can see the spectacular day when the Millerchips' edition of Marrying Mum and Dad airs at 10am and again at 4.30pm on Monday, August 5 on the CBBC channel.
