Works by big-name modern artists to go under the hammer in Shropshire
Work by some of modern arts biggest names will go under the hammer at a Shropshire art auction house next month.
Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Damien Hirst are just three of the artists whose work is featured in a selection of more than 100 pictures going up for sale at Halls' next collective auction at the Battlefield salerooms in Shrewsbury on August 21.
Pre-sale estimates for the pictures, which have been mainly consigned by three private collectors, range from under £100 to more than £2,000.
The auction includes works by or after Eric Ravilious, John Piper, Edward Bawden, Dame Elisabeth Frink, Patrick Caulfield, Bridget Riley and Sir Terry Frost, as well as other post war painters.
French and other European artists are represented by Henri Matisse, George Braque, Aristide Maillol, George Rouault, Fernand Leger, Jean Cocteau and Pierre Bonnard.
American pop artist Warhol, Hockney, Hirst, Philip Meninsky and Sandra Blow are also among the big names featured.
Of local interest to Shropshire is a work by John Alford entitled 'The Great Wind on Linley Avenue'.
Alford lived in Shrewsbury and exhibited both locally and in London as well as in other areas of Shropshire and Gloucestershire.
Another interesting oil painting is one produced with extremely thick impasto by David Smith, entitled 'Driller', which was purchased for 50 guineas from a 'London Artists' exhibition at Shrewsbury School in June, 1969.
Born in Lowestoft, Smith studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and at the British School in Rome.
Halls' fine art director Jeremy Lamond hopes to make modern British and European art a regular fixture in the company's auction calendar.
The auction lots will be on view on August 19 and 20, as well as morning of sale. For details call (01743) 450700.
