The young farmer was so intent on winning the inaugural carnival charity race that she and her driver, Matt Jones, ended up taking a dip in the ford in the town.

The pair picked themselves up, shook the water off and carried on to win the race.

The event, organised by Mike and Helen Oliver, was the perfect start to the carnival festivities in Clun.

Mr Oliver said seven pairs of youngsters took part in the kids' wheelbarrow race, along a a quarter of a mile course, with a few more in the adult event, many of them members of the Clun Young Farmers Club.

He said: "The race started and finished at the Sun went through the town centre, through the Waterloo Ford and then up the hill back to the Sun. Prizes were donated by the Sun and we had about 100 spectators."

It raised funds for the Fire Fighters Benevolent Fund and the carnival committee.

Tomorrow will see the 5.2-mile Clun Carnival Canter from the White Horse at 7.30pm and live music with Misty Blue Trio from 9pm.

Saturday is carnival day with the procession, including Knighton Town Silver Band, floats and historic vehicles, setting off at 1pm and the carnival queen being crowned in the Square at 1.30pm.

The show takes places from 2pm in the Castle Grounds and will include displays of flowers and produce, historic vehicles and birds of prey and various other fun activities.
