When the Rigby family started working on a piece of land near their home in Chetwynd Grove, the children were challenged to grow the largest sunflower.

The youngsters have watched carefully as their plants emerged from the ground – and they are now standing at a whopping 12ft tall.

The youngest sibling, five-year-old Emma, is currently in the lead, though there are still a couple of weeks of the inter-family contest left to run.

Mum Rachael Rigby said: "It's been really good. At times it looked like one sunflower would run away with it but then the others caught up. It's been really exciting for them to watch their sunflowers grow. They are really chuffed."

The Rigby family wanted extra space to start growing vegetables and were offered the use of a piece of land belonging to neighbour Joe Harriman for a nominal fee. It was overgrown but the family have worked together to turn it into an attractive plot.

The family scooped the best overall garden prize, and the best new garden accolade, in Newport Town Council's In Bloom gardening competition.
