Shropshire has seen off the worst of the wet weather, with a sunnier and drier few days to come this week.

Yesterday's heavy showers were clearing east overnight and today was due to be much brighter.

Laura Young, from the Met Office, said temperatures would be about the same as yesterday, with a minimum of 10C (50F) last night and a maximum of 21C (70F) today.

She said: "It's going to be much drier and brighter with some sunny spells, with just a chance of a light shower. That seems to be the case for the majority of the country over the course of the week.

"It will dry up and there will be some patchy showers and sunny intervals."

Forecasters have predicted localised flash flooding after a heavy band of rain lashed the UK over the weekend, although the Environment Agency has no flood warnings or flood alerts in place in the Midlands.

The bad weather proved a blessing to England's cricket team as the vital third Test at Old Trafford was washed out as a draw on the final day, meaning Alastair Cook's side retain the Ashes.

Australia had been in a good position as they looked to bowl England out cheaply for the win that would have kept them in the contest, but with England already leading the series 2-0, the Ashes are retained.

The highest rainfall registered yesterday was in Culdrose, Cornwall, where 11.2mm of rain fell in just one hour. A Met Office spokesman said floods were a greater risk after periods of dry weather, with hardened ground not allowing water to be absorbed.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said there had been isolated incidents of flash flooding and Western Power Distribution said its engineers were attempting to restore electricity to more than 500 properties in the St Teath area of north Cornwall.
