Police called in over death of baby swan in Telford
Youths were seen running away and laughing after a cygnet died when a hook became stuck in its neck in Wellington.
Police are investigating the death at Dothill Pool.
Detectives today revealed the baby swan apparently died as an RSPCA officer arrived to rescue it on Tuesday.
An eyewitness, who phoned the RSPCA, said they had seen youngsters running away from the scene whilst laughing and bragging.
Fran Hill, from Cuan House Wildlife Rescue, said the cygnet died in the arms of the officer.
Injuring and killing the wild birds is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and attracts a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a £5,000 fine.
