Horsehay Village Golf Centre saw three local mainstream schools and three special schools use the centre and sport to maximise opportunities for young people with SEND.

Pupils from Lakeside Academy, Burton Borough, Hadley Learning Community, The Bridge, Southall and Haughton received six weekly sessions of golf coaching. Four at their own school and two at the Golf Centre where they were taught by golf professionals from Horsehay.

One of the coaches involved with the project, Tim Shrosbree said: "The pupils I worked with showed increased confidence in their own abilities over the course of the project and they loved the driving range which gave them a great way to compete against themselves as well as others by continually trying to better their last shot.

"They also showed a great sense of achievement and most showed a desire to play in their own time."

All of the young people who have taken part were given information on the opportunities available to them at the golf club. Parents were also welcome to attend the sessions so that they could see the value of their child participating in the programme.

Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for Children, Young People and Families, said: "The success of this programme has demonstrated the importance of individual sport for many children with SEND.

"Horsehay Golf Centre and the six schools who have worked together should be congratulated. I hope that we can extend the programme across more schools in the borough."
