James Gregson, from Crowmere Road in Shrewsbury, has managed to grow a six-sided tomato.

And the experienced gardener said despite his decades of experience, he has never seen anything like it.

"It is about six tomatoes in one. I have grown tomatoes for more than 50 years and have never seen one like that," he said.

Mr Gregson said the tomato had been grown from a standard packet of seeds bought from a supermarket.

"It was just a packet of seeds I brought from the supermarket. They were called Marmalade," he said.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, the best time to start growing the fruit is in early spring.

A spokesman said: "Tomatoes are very easy to grow from seed. Start them off indoors, using a propagator or place the pots in a plastic bag and keep on the windowsill.

"You can sow seed from late March to early April if you will be growing the plants outdoors. If you are planning on growing your tomatoes in a greenhouse, you can start sowing seed earlier, from late February."

The RHS said those using heating greenhouses should sow seeds from mid-January to early February, with people using unheated greenhouses to start growing from late February to mid-March.
