Blow as Ludlow Royal British Legion club forced to close doors

An historic Royal British Legion club in Shropshire is set to shut its doors because of rocketing maintenance costs and diminishing membership.

Fully paid-up club members have been invited to a special closed meeting at the Victory House site in Mill Street, Ludlow, tonight where they will be asked to vote to call time on the club.

It comes just a year after officials at the club issued an emotional "use it or lose it" plea to townsfolk.

The club opened in 1946 after people donated more than £1,600 to buy Victory House. At its height it had well over 1,000 members – but president Martin Taylor-Smith said there were now less than 300.

He stressed that any decision to close would have no impact on the future of the town's Royal British Legion branch.
