Driving charge over A49 crash dropped
A charge of driving without due care and attention against a motorist involved in a crash that left another woman with serious injuries has been dropped.
Averil Wood, 66, had been accused of driving without due care and attention after the two-car crash on the A49 near Preston Brockhurst on August 9, last year.
It left one car on its roof.
A woman suffered multiple injuries and was trapped in her car for more than an hour after the accident near Wem.
She was cut free by firefighters who removed the roof of her car as it rested "precariously" on a 4ft high wall.
The woman was then airlifted to University Hospital of North Staffordshire.
Mrs Wood, of Tarporley Road, Whitchurch, was due to appear at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court yesterday charged with driving without due care and attention.
She had previously pleaded not guilty. Mr John Baker, prosecuting, said: "On August 9, 2012, a Mitsubihi Shogun, which was being driven by Averil Wood, was involved in a road traffic accident with a Fiat Panda on the A49 at Preston Brockhurst.
"Following a detailed police investigation into the accident, a file was forwarded to the CPS and we, as with all cases, applied the Full Code Test. The case against Mrs Wood originally passed the test and she was charged with driving a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road without due care and attention. As part of our continuing duty to keep cases under constant review, expert reports on behalf of the prosecution and defence were received."
He added that having consider the reports "a decision was made to drop the charge against Mrs Wood on the basis that there was now insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction".
