The accident happened close to the Red House Inn in Wellington Road, Lilleshall, at about noon.

The driver of the estate car, who is in his 60s, had to be cut free of the wreckage by firefighters before being taken to University Hospital of North Staffordshire by Midlands Air Ambulance more than an hour-and-a-half later.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said early examinations suggested the accident could have been caused by a "medical episode".

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "One male casualty was released by the fire service using cutting equipment. He received medical treatment by paramedics and was taken to hospital by air ambulance."
