Rail passengers in Shropshire are facing more than a week of disruption due to "essential" work on a viaduct.

Trains between Shrewsbury and Wrexham General will be diverted via Chester and Crewe while improvements are carried out to Cefn Mawr viaduct near Chirk.

Replacement bus services will run between Shrewsbury and Wrexham calling at stations in Gobowen, Chirk and Ruabon.

The work by Network Rail contractors will start on Saturday and will last for eight days. The changes will affect Trains Wales services between Holyhead and Shrewsbury, and hourly shuttle trains will run between Wrexham and Chester while the work is carried out.

Passengers using the trains at Wellington and Telford will not be affected.

Lynne Milligan, customer services director at Arriva Trains Wales, said the work would speed up journey times.

She said: "We are asking customers to check their journey details in advance and to allow extra time for their journeys.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may result from these unavoidable changes. The improvement works form part of a larger scheme in the area which will lead to shorter journey times between north and south Wales in the future."

She said the changes will also disrupt other services in Cardiff, Holyhead and Llandudno.
