Work on Newport Swimming Pool stopped while sewer diverted

This is the scene at Newport Swimming Pool, where work on a £1 million extension has stalled after builders found problems with the sewers.

The site has been a hub of activity with diggers on site since last month removing earth in preparation for the pool's new extension.

When complete, the extension will house a fitness suite large enough for about 50 workout machines.

But today there is nothing going on, because builders have discovered that the sewer needs to be diverted.

Emily Knightley, spokeswoman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said contractors were waiting for more equipment to arrive to enable them to do the diversion.

She said work should re-start by the end of this week.

"Due to unexpected works that need to be done to divert the sewer, we are awaiting further equipment to complete this work," she said.

"The team hope that work will re-start by the end of the week.

"At this stage we would hope that the delay won't mean that work will be completed late. We will try to regain the time lost once the swimming pool is closed."

Telford & Wrekin Council has appointed Telford-based Pryce Builders to carry out the work, which also includes the refurbishment of the pool changing rooms to provide a modern unisex changing village with improved facilities for families and disabled users.

Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of December.

The pool will be closed from October until the work is completed, while the changing rooms are upgraded.

The council has been contacting regular pool users to discuss alternative arrangements during the closure period.
