Former Whitchurch nightclub will become antique centre within weeks
The new owners of a controversial former nightclub in Whitchurch hope to transform it into an antique and collectors' centre within weeks, they revealed today.
The club, in Green End, has lain empty for about two years, but it has now been bought by local men, illustrator Paul Sample and owner of the White Bear, Martin Cox.
The venue, formerly known as the Caddy Shack, closed amid complaints of noise from neighbours and frequent fights on the street.
The new owners had originally hoped to open the business in the spring, but say it should be available for viewing by the middle of next month for people who are interested in having antiques stalls.
The idea is that several antique traders could rent space on the ground floor, while the town's Blackberry Fair group will take over the first floor and holds workshops and art based activities.
Mr Sample said: "We are putting signs up, the decorators are in and it is being fitted out.
"I think it should be available for viewing for people who want stalls by mid-September.
"One of the things we want it to do is to attract tourism. Tourists just love antiques. People who we have told seem to love the idea."
The owners have remained tight-lipped about how much the property was bought for.
