Thousands flock to Shrewsbury Steam Rally
[gallery] Thousands flocked to this year's Shrewsbury Steam Rally, which organisers today said has easily matched up to last year's award-winning event.
Even the slightly grey and muddy start to the event did not dampen the spirits of those attending.
More than 8,000 people made their way to the event, causing delays of up to half an hour on the A458 as eager enthusiasts arrived at Onslow Park yesterday.
Derek Whitefoot, rally organiser, said: "It has gone very well, it is comparable with other years and the weather has been good which makes a big difference."
Last year the rally was awarded Event of the Year by the national traction engine body and Mr Whitefoot believes they have reached the same standard.
He said: "We're up to the same quality this year again.
"We have definitely done enough to qualify in my book.
"We have some very staunch, regular supporters and that's down to the quality of the event. We're considered to be one of the best events of the year."
One of those supporters is Alex Steele, who travelled all the way from Fife to display his steam engine, Little Dawn.
Mr Steele said: "This is the first time I have been here but it is very good, I would say it is one of the best in the country."
John Milns and his family have been part of the event for a number of years. He was helping to display a newly rebuilt centre engine.
He said: "I think it is a really good event, there's lots of variety for people to come and see."
Tony Stevens had travelled from Bomere Heath, just a few miles north of Shrewsbury to display his Austin Sheerline Limousine.
He said: "I've been coming for more than 20 years. I'm an enthusiast in terms of all vehicles so I really enjoy the weekend.
"I bring this vehicle regularly and it has won first prize a couple of times in the post-war cars.
"The weather has been ideal, if the sun's out it is too hot, so it's been nice, cloudy with a bit of sun."
Diana Butcher and Brian Bromwich had brought their vintage prams for this year's pram parade.
Ms Butcher said: "This rally is like a mini holiday, we just love it."
Jerry Evans, from Chirk, was displaying his rare vintage Chinese 6RF wagon, which had previously been part of the White Star line. According to Mr Evans, his vehicle is one of only three left in existence.
He said: "These shows are in the blood, I've got three vehicles, you do them up, go to a show, sell them and buy another."
And it wasn't just enthusiasts who were enjoying the rally.
Andrew Farr was at the event with his wife Gill and twin sons James and Will, aged eight.
He said: "We think it is great, we've missed the past two years but we think it is excellent, we love all things agricultural."
Also visiting the show for the first time, was Tom Davies and Rhian Jones with daughter Elleah.
Ms Jones said: "My mum and dad have been on about it so we decided to come and its been great.
"Elleah really enjoyed the tractors, it has tired her out now."
