Motorcyclist killed in A49 crash at Dorrington
A man in his 40s has died after his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a van on one of Shropshire's busiest main roads.
The biker, who is yet to be named, suffered a serious head injury in the incident on the A49 at Dorrington, south of Shrewsbury, yesterday afternoon.
He went into cardiac arrest at the scene and was flown to University Hospital North Staffordshire but was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital.
The incident occurred at about 12.30pm and kept a large stretch of the A49 closed until shortly before 6pm.
The van driver had no serious injuries but was treated for shock and taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a precaution.
Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a trauma doctor on board attended the scene.
Claire Brown, a spokeswoman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "The motorcyclist, a man, had sustained a serious head injury. Whilst crews and the doctor began to assess and treat the man, his condition worsened and he went into cardiac arrest.
"They quickly commenced advanced life support at the roadside but, despite resuscitation, the man's condition quickly deteriorated and he went back into cardiac arrest. Sadly, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, the doctor and hospital medics, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital."
Emergency services closed a large stretch of the A49 in both directions, from the Dobbies Island in Bayston Hill to the B4371 Sandford Avenue junction in Church Stretton.
Inspector Andy Smith, for West Mercia Police, said they were appealing for any witnesses of the incident to call Shrewsbury Police Station on the 101 number.
