Stuart Leys joined the force in 1952 and had a variety of postings in different places around Shropshire, including Oswestry, Shifnal, Wem and Broseley.

He was promoted to sergeant in Shrewsbury in 1953 and eventually became an inspector in Wellington, a position he held until he retired. His friend John Bradburn said: "With his officers, he was firm when he needed to be but scrupulously fair."

Mr Leys was born in Dumfries but moved with his family to Campbeltown where he grew up before joining the military.

His wartime service saw him serving in India and after leaving the military joined the Renfrew and Bute Constabulary in 1951, before and old friend convinced him to move to the Shropshire Constabulary.

It was while at a dance at Park Hall Camp in Oswestry that he met his wife, Margaret, who he married in 1952.

While an inspector he also headed the prosecution department, and when he retired went to work for a solicitor in Wellington until his full retirement in 1984. Mr Bradburn said: "He had a lifelong passion for golf and was a member of the Wrekin Golf Club." This passion led him to hold several positions at the club, including captain, secretary and president.

Mr Leys died at The Villa nursing home, in Madeley, on August 8 and a funeral service was held at Telford Crematorium yesterday.
