The fun day in Shrewsbury's Quarry Park was attended by parents and tots who took part in the family-friendly eight kilometre race yesterday in aid of Tommy's Charity, which raises funds for research into pregnancy complications, miscarriage, and still and premature births.

The fun run was organised by Nicci Shrimpton, from Caersws, near Newtown, who runs her own postnatal buggyfit exercise classes in Shrewsbury, Welshpool and Newtown.

Miss Shrimpton said: "Everyone who took part was amazing. We had runners, walkers, mums and dads taking part, some running, some walking and some pushing buggys. It was a great atmosphere and everyone had a really good time and did amazingly well on the 8k course. "

The mum-of-two hopes to have raised more than £2000 for the charity, which also provides support and advice to parents-to-be.

The event began with children's entertainment and an aerobic warm-up before the race was started at 10.30am by Miss United Kingdom Beautiful, Bev Roberts.

Sue Wright, from Telford, took part in memory of her son whose birthday coincided with the Baby Race.

She had a difficult pregnancy requiring months of bed rest in hospital.

At 22 weeks, she suffered a placental abruption, and her son Thomas was stillborn on 1 September 2009.

Sue said: "Losing Thomas was without a doubt was the hardest day of my life. The race is taking place on what would have been his fourth birthday, and I can't think of a better way to remember him or to give hope to other mums-to-be than running the Baby Race in aid of Tommy's."
