Yours for almost £8,000 - bottle of wine at Shrewsbury merchants
It would cost someone the same to buy a brand new car or put a deposit down on a house. And now a bottle of wine worth nearly £8,000 has gone on sale at a wine merchant in Shrewsbury.
One of the most exciting bottles on the latest Oddments List from Tanners Wines is a Burgundy, 1969 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grand Cru.
Costing £7,895 for a bottle, it is the most expensive wine Tanners has ever put on sale.
The previous most expensive bottle of wine sold by Tanners cost £1,195 and was from the Rhone Valley in France. It was called Côte-Rôtie, La Mouline, E Guigal 1978.
The Oddments List contains a large number of wines released from the firm's museum reserve, all of which have matured in the cellars of its Shrewsbury headquarters since shipment.
James Tanner, managing director, said "I drank a bottle of that particular wine with my father in 1988 over supper at home.
"I found my tasting note which was full of eulogies, but questioned whether it really was worth £100. Well it has appreciated a little in value since then."
Previously, some of the world's most expensive bottle of wines have gone on sale for more than £100,000.
"These bottles are usually bought by collectors and enthusiasts and we think they are usually drunk rather than kept, as most are old and fully mature so will no longer improve with age," Mr Tanner added.
Other wines on Tanners bi-monthly Oddments List include rare vertical flights of several vintages of Château Palmer and Domaine G Roumier's Chambolle Musigny 1er cru Les Amoureuses.
Tanners Wines was established in Shrewsbury in 1842. The current managing director is the fourth generation of his family to run the firm.
