Officers will deploy from Donnington Police Station after the Wellington Road building shuts on September 30, West Mercia Police said.

It was announced in February this year that Newport Police Station would close, along with several others across Shropshire, as the force deals with £20 million in spending cuts.

A community policing post will be set up in the town as a place for officers to carry out interviews and write reports.

West Mercia Police said talks were ongoing with the owners of possible locations.

It is believed that viewings have taken place at The Hub, in St Mary's Street, Burton Borough School and The Cosy Hall.

There has not been a counter service at Newport Police Station for a number of years. Police are looking to sell the building which costs around £33,000 a year to run.
