Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski was raising the issue of securing funding for the road at Prime Minister's Questions this afternoon.

Mr Kawczynski said the scheme could be provided with money out of a £100 billion fund the Government has set aside for major infrastructure projects.

"I will be asking the Prime Minister to formally get behind our campaign for funding for the North West Relief Road," he said. "This vital artery is essential to reduce congestion in Shrewsbury town centre and for business and economic development."

The scheme, dropped two years ago due to a lack of cash, caused huge controversy when it was previously mooted. It would create a four-mile bypass, from Churncote roundabout west of Shrewsbury to the roundabout on the Ellesmere Road.
