Morrisons today revealed it plans to add a petrol station next to its proposed new store in Newport.

The supermarket giant has confirmed it hopes to submit a planning application for the filling station in Audley Avenue in "the next couple of weeks".

Morrisons has permission to build a 33,000sq ft supermarket at the site.

But Telford & Wrekin Council has applied for leave to appeal against the development in the High Court as it favours a larger Sainsbury's in Station Road.

Aoife Conacur, a spokeswoman for the agent, Indigo Planning, said: "The new petrol filling station is to be occupied by Morrisons in connection with the already consented food store development on adjoining land.

"We hope to be in a position to submit the planning application in the next couple of weeks."

There would also be a car wash and forecourt building, Ms Conacur said.

The petrol station will replace industrial units currently occupied by Ableworld, Beacon Corporation, Edgmond Foods and AYP Ltd. Those businesses have been informed and will move to the nearby Parkland House site.

Ms Conacur said initial discussions have already taken place with the Environment Agency and due to groundwater conditions, the petrol tanks are proposed to be located above ground. Morrisons maintains that its store should be open for trading next year.

Sainsbury's, which is still battling to open a store in nearby Station Road, had planned to have petrol station at that site but scrapped the idea amid fears raised by environmental experts it could contaminate the local water system.
