The MP's petition garnered more than 1,000 signatures in support of moving the market back to the High Street, where it was last held in 2010.

In total, 1,096 people signed the petition and today he took it to London to take part in a ceremonial laying of the petition.

Mr Wright said: "To get more than 1,000 signatures shows the strength of feeling about getting the market back into the High Street in Dawley.

"I am delighted with the number of people who have signed it and I would like to thank the local traders for their support. They have been busy getting signatures.

"It is not just people from Dawley who have signed the petition, there are people from all over. I hope we will be able to get the market back into the High Street before Christmas."

The popular market was moved to a car park in Meadow Road in 2010 as part of a regeneration of Dawley.

But since the last election, where Labour were voted back into control of Telford & Wrekin Council, there has been a change in attitude towards the market.

Councillors are now working to get the market reinstated to the High Street.

Earlier this week, Councillor Shaun Davies, chairman of Great Dawley Town Council, revealed his plans for the future of Dawley, which included moving the market back into the High Street.

He also announced the town council would be funding 20 free stalls at the market to encourage its growth.
