Firefighters from Shrewsbury, Telford and Wellington were sent to fight the blaze which started in the bedroom of an end of terrace property in Severn Street, Shrewsbury, at about 4.15pm yesterday.

Crews used breathing apparatus and three hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

It is believed the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault but a spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said investigations are still ongoing.

The family, two parents and their two grown-up children, were unharmed in the incident but damage was caused to the property, with a first-floor window burnt out in the blaze.

Police and the ambulance service also attended the scene.

Councillor Alan Mosley, Labour leader at Shropshire Council, lives nearby the house, which is close to Morris Lubricants.

He said: "The fire started in the bedroom. It was quite a severe fire but everybody got out uninjured.

"At the moment it is too early to say what caused it to start but the rumours are it was an electrical fault.

"There is significant damage to the property, particularly upstairs and it is clear there has been a lot of smoke, but I am really pleased to say the fire brigade got here very quickly, dealt with the fire swiftly and everyone is safe and well."

Fire crews left the scene at around 6.30pm.
