More needs to be done to tackle speeding in Gobowen, say councillors.

They have called for an extension of reduced speed limits on some of the area's main routes.

They said drivers were still breaking the limit despite the siting of a speed camera van at the side of the road on a regular basis.

Latest figures from the Safer Roads Partnership revealed that although the speed was coming down since the introduction of the enforcement action, motorists were still breaking the speed limit.

Speed data collected at the site has highlighted that 76 per cent of offenders are from Shropshire.

Of that, 47 per cent are from Gobowen itself.

The councillors were invited to list their key road safety worries as part of a new strategy by county highways bosses.

Clerk Penny O'Hagan told a meeting of Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council that under the new strategy they could suggest up to five issues they wanted Shropshire Council to address.

She said parish councils would be asked three times a year to bring forward their concerns to unitary authority road chiefs.

Councillors said one of the main concerns which remained was the speed of traffic going along St Martins Road.

Councillor David Lloyd described the fact that many of the offenders themselves were from Gobowen as a "maddening situation".

He said: "Unfortunately it is the people from the village who are choosing to put their foot down." The councillor said the speed van acted as deterrent because when it was absent, the speed of traffic seemed to rise.

He said there were also problems with speeding in other parts of the village including Whittington Road and Chirk Road.

Parish councillor Sue Crow said another traffic matter which needed attention was the overgrown roundabouts on the A5 while other councillors said they wanted improved safety on Twmpath Lane and an extension of the 40mph on Whittington Road. The exit from the A5 into Gobowen was also a concern, the meeting heard.

The parish councillors' concerns will be passed on to Shropshire Council's highways bosses.

A campaign to bring a pedestrian crossing to St Martins Road in Gobowen is also continuing.
