Woman seriously injured in house fire
A woman is in a serious condition in hospital after being rescued from a house fire by firefighters.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at a bungalow on Lodgevale Park, Chirk, at 1.35am today.
The woman suffered the effects of breathing in smoke in the fire and was taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment.
Three fire appliances from Chirk, Llangollen and Wrexham were sent to the bungalow after the alarm was raised in the early hours of this morning.
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a 65-year-old woman from the property.
"She was transferred to hospital by ambulance following preliminary treatment at the scene by paramedics for severe smoke inhalation.
"Her condition is described as serious.
"Firefighters used six sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets in extinguishing the fire.
"A dog, also rescued from the property, is in a serious condition and the RSPCA is being consulted.
"The damage to the property is currently being assessed and the cause of the fire is under investigation."
Neighbours today spoke of their shock at the severity of the fire.
One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "It is pretty shocking, especially when it happens on your doorstep. Hopefully the lady will be OK.
"I do not know her but I think everybody would wish her well."
Another neighbour said: "I'm really sorry to hear about it and I hope the lady gets better soon.
"I do not know here very well because she only moved in a little while ago - I think she moved in a few months ago and I heard she was really happy here.
"It is an awful thing. I heard sirens at about 2am but did not know it was this serious."
