The Department for Transport has announced the funding for Telford & Wrekin Council.

The money is specifically for work to Malinslee Roundabout, which forms part of the box road scheme and falls within the first phase of improvement work along with St Quentin Gate.

The works will be completed by the end of January, in time for the opening of the new ASDA store and Southwater developments

The improvement work, which is costing a total of £11.8million, will add new pedestrian areas, ease traffic and improve access between the £250m Southwater development and Telford Shopping Centre.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport, said: "I'm delighted that we have been successful in securing further funding from the Department for Transport for the box road scheme.

"This is a major scheme for the area, which will improve access to Telford town centre, £7.8 million of which is now funded by the Department for Transport and reflects the strong national reputation that Telford has for delivering major projects and transformation.

"The scheme very much fits in with the aim of the Southwater development in creating a more traditional town centre feel and I'm pleased that we have so much support in delivering these major projects."

Telford & Wrekin Council is one of 14 local authorities to receive additional funding for transport improvements through the Government's pinch point fund.

Lucy Allan, Telford's parliamentary candidate for the Conservative Party, said: "It is great that the Government have given Telford this money. Projects like this are improving the future of Telford immeasurably. A less congested road will make it easier for people."
