Dawley Market back and MP is calling for it to be a hit

Telford MP David Wright is calling on the people of Dawley to make good use of their market when it returns to the High Street next week for the first time in three years.

The market will take place on Friday, October 11, following a successful petition and application to temporarily alter traffic arrangements.

Mr Wright said: "This is a real step forward for Dawley

"I know that the public and local traders are right behind this move and that was illustrated in their support for my recent petition.

"It's now crucial that we all use the market and make it a success. I put it to the residents to use the market and help bring traders into the town."

Telford & Wrekin Council confirmed yesterday that the High Street would be closed to traffic between 8am and 4pm on Fridays.

During the closure vehicles will be unable to travel along High Street or Burton Street any further than the junction with Doseley Road.

Access to Burton Street and George Street will remain unaffected for businesses and residents who have access to off-street parking from those roads.

The road closure will be on an experimental basis for a maximum of 18 months, at which point a decision will be made whether or not to make the weekly closure permanent.

Clive Barton, facilities management manager for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "I'm glad that we have been able to bring Dawley market back to the High Street, and I'm sure it's going to be a popular move."

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, Employment and Skills, added: "We are pleased that a means of allowing the market back onto the High Street has been found.

"The traffic order is experimental and we will listen to local views and make assessments of the impact and benefits of restricting vehicle access to help determine whether the road closure will become a permanent weekly event."

Any who wants to support or object to the road closure can do so over the next six months by e-mailing highways@telford.gov.uk or writing to Traffic Management Centre, Neighbourhood and Leisure Services, Telford & Wrekin Council, Darby House, TF3 4JA.
