The smash between the HGV and a car happened southbound between junction 11 for Cannock, and junction 10a for the M54, at around 8.40am.
Highways Agency spokeswoman Pragati Baddhan said none of the radioactive load had spilled onto the road.
Fire crews were sent to the scene to check the area was safe.
The smash led to two-mile tailbacks on the southbound side as two lanes were closed. All lanes have now reopened.
Staffordshire Police also attended the scene. Spokeswoman Sarah Davison said: "We were called at 8.40am to a multi-vehicle smash. It was reported to us that the HGV was carrying a hazardous load."
