Stan Glithero paid two men £40 to remove the carpet and underlay from the front of his property in Newport, and it was later found dumped on a roadside verge, Stafford magistrates were told.

The fly-tipping was reported to Stafford Borough Council who traced the rubbish to Glithero. The court was told Glithero, of Sunny Gardens, was unable to name the men or give the registration of their vehicle.

Gary Finn, prosecuting for the council, said: "In interview Mr Glithero said he did understand he had a duty of care regarding waste produced at his property and that it should be disposed of properly."

The fly tip was discovered on the rural Meretown Lane near Newport at its junction with the A518.

Some of the items were in large clear plastic sacks, although the majority was loose at the side of the road, the court heard.

Glithero, 49, admitted a charge of failing to ensure his household waste was given to an authorised person in April and was last Wednesday fined £135 with £535.50 costs and a victim surcharge of £20.

He denied the offence at an earlier hearing but changed his plea after taking legal advice. He said the men told him they were going to recycle the material

"Unfortunately I have taken two men at face value and in good faith."
