Twenty-eight officers who have served in Newport over the past 40 years posed for a picture as the lights went out for the final time at the Wellington Road station.

The station closed on Monday as West Mercia Police deals with £20 million in spending cuts.

The get-together was organised by the former Newport bobby Dave Parry, who won two chief constable commendations and the West Mercia local police officer of the year award in 2010 during his time in the town before taking his retirement from the force in August.

And Mr Parry had a surprise when the evening turned into his leaving party.

He said: "I felt it was a great time to get four decades of officers together to record the sad demise of the station. It was great to see people like Derek Griffiths and Roy Anderson from the past.

"I worked with only three great sergeants in 16 years – Pete Kidd, Derek Taylor and Chris Munro – who all gave outstanding service and really knew their community and staff.

"My friends and colleagues gave me a great send-off for my retirement."

Newport's police officers will now be based at Donnington in Telford.
