Newport police station still in use until new home found
Police officers will continue to use the recently closed Newport police station until a new home in the town is found, the force said today.
The police station in Wellington Road officially closed last Monday as West Mercia Police deals with £20 million in spending cuts.
But officers will continue to use the building until a venue for the town's new community policing post has been identified.
Sarah Bridge, a spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "The station closed on September 30 in terms of the Safer Neighbourhood Team and patrol officers are no longer booking on there.
"However, until a community policing post is confirmed, officers are still able to access the station to use facilities."
Constable Andy Wardlow today said available officers would continue to answer the door if members of the public ring the bell until relocation is complete.
West Mercia Police is searching for a suitable location for the community policing post, which will be a place for officers to write reports and take a break while working in the town.
The force has been offered the use of Newport Town Council's Guildhall offices in High Street on a six month trial period, but only outside of normal office hours.
The force has also looked at Harper Adams University, Burton Borough School, the youth centre in St Mary's Street and Cosy Hall in Water Lane.
A final decision is expected shortly.
