The occupants had to be freed from their cars in separate accidents on the A49 south of Shrewsbury and the A5 north of Oswestry.

The first crash happened on the A49 at Little Stretton at 2.25pm on Saturday and involved two cars.

Two people were trapped in one vehicle and one in another.

Fire crews from Church Stretton and Craven Arms were on the scene and released all three casualties in 45 minutes.

A West Midlands AMbulance service spokesman said: "We were called at 2.22pm to the A49 carriageway in Church Stretton.

"In attendance were two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle.

"Three patients were checked over at the scene.

"One man in his 80s was trapped in this car and was eventually transfered to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a precaution."

The second crash happened just before 7pm also on Saturday, on the A5 between the Gobowen and the Gledrid roundabouts, north of Oswestry.

One car overturned and left the carriageway.

Four people were released from that vehicle by two fire crews from Oswestry.

A woman was trapped in a second vehicle, which remained on the carriageway, and had to be released by firefighters.

The ambulance spokesman said: "We were called to the crash at 6.48pm at the junction of the A5 and the B5009 following reports of a car leaving the road.

"Four people were inside the car but we were all walking wounded.

"They were all taken in two land ambulances to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"It seems it was quite a serious crash but the people involved were very fortunate."
