New system comes into effect at Wem level crossing
Changes to one of the most abused level crossings in the country were today due to come into force in Shropshire.
A new automated system is being introduced at Wem level crossing which will see it controlled 120 miles away from Cardiff.
During the past couple of weeks the crossing has been closed to allow Network Rail to carry out tests on the new system.
Councillors in Wem had raised fears that people's safety could be at risk because of the changes, but rail bosses insist road users won't notice any difference.
Councillors also said that due to the complex nature of the junction a signalman is needed to ensure the public's safety. But following a meeting with Network Rail earlier this month Councillor Peter Broomhall said councillors' minds had been put at rest.
He added the signalman will be staying in the signal box for a week to oversee the changeover.
Recent figures from Network Rail indicated Wem level crossing was the sixth most abused in the country.
Jon Crampton, spokesman for Network Rail, said: "The upgrade of the level crossing in Wem is part of wider improvements on the line between Crewe and Shrewsbury to provide a safer, more efficient and reliable railway.
"As with any new infrastructure, we will continue to monitor the equipment so that it is working correctly."
