The McDonald Hill Valley Hotel Spa and Golf has applied to Shropshire Council for outline planning permission to build 86 homes on land next to the complex in Tarporley Road.

The proposal was outlined to members of Whitchurch Town Council at a meeting held in Bargates Hall last night.

Emma Jones, from agents GL Hearn, told members the outline application consists of 76 five-bedroom homes and 10 affordable properties that will have either two or three bedrooms.

She added the application will help Shropshire Council meet its core strategy of building homes across the county.

Ms Jones said: "This is a development that will fit in well in Whitchurch and with the local landscape.

"It is not going to affect the business nor is it going to encroach onto the golf course. However some of the homes will have the benefit of a view of the fairway. In terms of a visual impact obviously the area will change but it is an urban location.

"We have undertaken transport assessments, ecology assessments and assessed the impact on the landscape to ensure that this development can be accommodated.

"There will be a minimal impact on the highway network. The application is in accordance with the core strategy of Shropshire Council and will help to meet targets to build new homes."

But Councillor Ticker Harris said he felt most people in Whitchurch would not be able to afford a five bedroom house.

He said: "To be quite honest this is not a housing estate for locals because the money in this town will not allow people to buy that kind of house."

But Ms Jones said the outline application could be subject to change after consultation with the council and a developer.

She said: "This is only one way the homes could be accommodated. It's an outline application and is open to consultation.

"A developer may want to change the layout of the homes and build properties with less bedrooms."

The design and access statement submitted to Shropshire Council said the homes would be built to overlook the surrounding green spaces, "providing an exceptional visual amenity for residents."

The development would be accessed via a new T-junction off Tarporley Road.
