The motorway was shut by police between junction six and seven in both directions because of standing water on the road surface.

Motorists were advised to slow down and as the wet weather was set to worsen further delays were expected around the area.

Torrential rain was causing problems elsewhere today, with localised flooding causing difficulties for motorists and rail passengers.

Up to an inch of rain was falling - and forecasters say they expect the rest of the week to remain wet.

Environment Agency manager Dave Throup reported an inch of rain to the west of Hereford and Shrewsbury in last 24 hours, with the highest measured at Lake Vyrnwy with 40mm.

He said forecast heavy rain was raising the flood risk for some parts of the region, including the top of the Severn and Wye catchments

Rail passengers faced delays west of Telford, with flooding disrupting trains between Shrewsbury and Welshpool.

A number of roads in the Telford & Wrekin area were suffering from surface water, with police urging people to drive with care.

One road in the county, Prees Heath Road close to Whitchurch Rugby Club, was completely under water.
