The centre and hide have been created at the Wood Lane Nature Reserve off the A528 near Ellesmere.

Schoolchildren and a group of about 50 VIPs, including councillors and trustees of Shropshire Wildlife Trust, visited the new facilities at an official unveiling ceremony yesterday .

The learning centre will provide people with the chance to learn more about the environment.

The hide, which was officially named Heron Hide by the winner of a children's competition, will provide visitors with an uninterrupted view of the wetland.

Stuart Edmunds, from Shropshire Wildlife Trust, said: "It has gone really well. We have had kids here from Lawley Primary School in Telford, one of whom won a competition to name the hide. The reaction f has been excellent."

Mr Edmunds said the new hide is the first of its kind to be fitted with a living bog roof, while the adjoining classroom area will be available as a multifunctional community facility.
