Record-breaking racing for model power boats in Shropshire

Warnings of a storm brewing were not enough to blow model power boats out of the water as they raced along a lake in Shropshire at record speeds.[gallery]

More than 20 boats competed in the model power boat speed trials at Dearnford Lake, near Whitchurch – and saw one reach 77mph moments before it flipped over and sank.

The event was organised by the Model Power Boat Association and saw vessels race over a 110 yard distance against the clock.

Organiser David Harvey said despite fears the event would have to be called off due to the high winds and rain forecast the decision was taken to proceed – and six records were subsequently broken on Sunday .

Mr Harvey said: "Every year we attempt to break speed records for model boats travelling in a straight 110 yard line.

"This year the event took place at Dearnford Lake and it was absolutely brilliant.

"We were really worried beforehand because we felt the event might not go ahead, what with the weather warning, but the trees sheltered the lake really well so we actually had perfect conditions.

"We broke six records on the day with a top speed of 77mph. Although the boat that was travelling at that speed actually flipped over and sank to the bottom of the lake. It was a very expensive boat and is still there now."

Mr Harvey said boats raced in a series of categories based on their weight and size of battery they could hold.

He said the record-breaking day was a "fantastic" event.

He added: "A few people who normally take part actually stayed away bec-ause of the weather warning but they must regret that now."

He said: "About 30 to 40 people came along to watch after seeing the event publicised in the paper. When they saw just how fast the boats go they were amazed.

"I was really pleased with how the day went and the venue so I will be looking to hold the event there again next year."

Rob Bebbington, from Dearnford Lake, said he plans to get a diver in to recover the boat at the bottom of the lake.

He added: "The event was really good. We were worried they would cancel but everything went ahead and those that took part recorded some great speeds.

"Boats of all different shapes and sizes took part and it was great to watch."
