Bridgnorth and surrounding areas would not be able to cope with a huge influx of houses, councillors have claimed.

Members of Bridgnorth Town Council have called for a further meeting with the county council to discuss plans to build hundreds homes in Tasley.

On Monday they discussed Shropshire Council's plans for 500 houses and new employment land. The plans form part of Shropshire Council's Site Allocations Management and Development document, known as SAMDev, which will look at housing and employment across the county until 2026.

Bridgnorth town clerk Anne Wilson said: "There are too many unanswered questions in relation to the ability of our infrastructure to cope with a large influx of houses.

"We have asked that they come back and consult with Tasley Parish Council and Bridgnorth Town Council before finalising their proposals.

"Should Shropshire Council agree to a further meeting with both councils, Bridgnorth and Tasley would meet beforehand with a view to move this matter forward."

During the meeting on Monday councillors heard three-quarters of the people who responded to a questionnaire were against the total number of houses proposed and about the same number opposed each of the two main housing sites either side of Church Lane in Tasley.

There was also strong opposition to the proposal to allow development across the bypass.
