The 33-year-old victim remains under sedation following the attack in Oakengates.

Police are investigating the possibility that the attack followed a row in a night club earlier in the evening.

West Mercia Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said that the victim had just left the Ice Lounge nightclub in the early hours of Saturday with a male friend when they were approached by a group of men on the car park that leads to Canongate.

Unconscious

The two men were attacked by the group and, although the victim's friend suffered only minor injuries, the 33-year-old was left unconscious on the floor with head injuries.

Mr Ammonds said: "Paramedics were immediately called to the scene and the victim was rushed to hospital in Stoke.

"At the present time he remains sedated in ITU while medical staff assess his injuries.

"Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have information and they are investigating the possibility that it could be linked to a disagreement that happened earlier in the evening in Ice Lounge."

Anyone with information about the attack should call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident number 61S 091113.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers number 0800 555111.
