Council backs £100,000 spend on Shrewsbury town signs
Plans to spend up to £100,000 on improving the way visitors to Shrewsbury find their way around town will be moved forward, according to council chiefs.
Shrewsbury Town Council has said it will help to lead the efforts to enhance the experience of tourists who come to the town.
It follows a report published earlier this year by independent consultant Fran Raybould, who said improved signage and town maps were required to help visitors.
Members of Shrewsbury Town Council said they would "fully support and lead development" of a potential new wayfinding strategy for the town, while not being solely responsible for paying for its implementation.
The issue was discussed at a full town council meeting on Monday.
It follows Ms Raybould giving a presentation to the council's finance and general purposes committee in early October.
Her report stated an integrated pedestrian signs scheme was needed to better promote major town centre assets such as Shrewsbury Castle and the Quarry to visitors.
She outlined a "skeleton" scheme that would cost around £100,000 and include new signs to help pedestrians get around town.
The budget for the complete scheme would be about £250,000.
At the meeting in October, the finance and general purposes committee said the town council would look to support the introduction of the skeleton scheme.
The report was welcomed by the full council meeting.
Councillor Andrew Bannerman said he was "very impressed" with the way-finding report, but questioned whether other organisations would be involved in addition to the town council.
Town clerk Helen Ball said Shropshire Council has also been involved with discussions about the scheme, while leaders of Shrewsbury Business Improvement District (Bid) could also be involved.
"We have also had initial discussions with the Bid manager. That is dependent on the outcome of the ballot on November 20, we can't say until that time," she said.
