Council open to offers for Shrewsbury golf course
Shropshire Council chiefs are prepared to listen to offers for a 12-hole golf course in Shrewsbury, it has been revealed.
No offers have yet been made for Meole Brace Golf Course, according to Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow but he said the authority would consider any bids made for the site.
It comes after a public meeting was called by mayor of Shrewsbury Councillor Jon Tandy after he was approached by a number of people concerned about rumours of plans to sell the golf course.
The council is already looking to sell off its Shirehall headquarters in Shrewsbury to help make the necessary savings.
The future of the golf course, which also has a nine-hole pitch and putt course, has been the subject of considerable speculation for several years dating back to when it was owned by the former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council.
The public meeting will be held on Monday at the Guildhall in Frankwell, and Councillor Tandy said it was vital to retain as much recreational space as possible.
Councillor Tandy said: "This would be a great loss to the town.
"The golf course is not only a wonderful resource for golfers but also for walkers and those living nearby. We have a lack of recreational space in the town and to lose this would be a real shame.
"I asked Councillor Barrow if he was looking for buyers of the land and he told me that if an offer was made it would be considered.
"I want to be able to kick the rumours in to touch before it goes any further."
Councillor Barrow said: "No offers on the golf course have been received but if one came it is something we would have to look at."
The golf course is currently open all year round.
Monday's meeting at the Guildhall will be held between 6pm and 8pm and all are welcome.
