Long-awaited changes will be made to Welshpool's one-way system, dubbed an "accident waiting to happen", after councillors admitted they had let residents down.

The town's one-way system will undergo a series of alterations including the introduction of an improved pedestrian crossing by the Spar shop in Church Street, a yellow box at the Mill Lane/Brook Street/Church Street junction and the possibility of enhanced pedestrian crossings on Broad Street and High Street.

Councillors voted in favour of bringing the changes in as soon as possible.

Councillor Viola Evans, who was part of a scrutiny committee which investigated the system and made recommendations 12 months ago, said: "We have done nothing for the people of Welshpool and have let them down."
