Parents call for urgent safety work after accident outside Shropshire school
Angry parents have demanded a pedestrian crossing be installed on a busy road near a Shropshire primary school after a boy was knocked down and seriously injured in an accident.
The safety calls were made to parish councillors in Gobowen last night following the accident in St Martins Road, Gobowen, on Friday.
And the campaigners have also called for a speed cut from 30mph to 20mph and other safety improvements in St Martins Road.
Their concerns were raised at last night's meeting of Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council, attended by about 30 members of the public.
The campaigners called for the parish councillors' backing, urging them to demand urgent action from highways bosses at Shropshire Council.
Campaigner Donna St John said: "This safety issue was initially raised a year ago with the parish council.
"A petition was put into Shropshire Council in January with 762 names.
"In March there was a meeting at Shirehall with our representatives and we were told it would be a top priority. A statement released last month has now said that our need for a crossing will be assessed and prioritised against other competing schemes.
"What more needs to happen before this crossing is placed at the top of the priority list?"
Parish councillors said they shared the community's concerns. Shropshire councillor for Gobowen David Lloyd said he had hoped the crossing would be given top priority, particularly after the request received wide support at a meeting in Shirehall in March and was the first to be made under the council's new road safety policy.
