Shropshire Rotary clubs quick to help Philippines typhoon victims
Rotary clubs across Shropshire have launched campaigns to raise money for the victims of the devastating Philippines typhoon.
More than 11 million people are believed to have been affected by the disaster and reports have suggested up to 10,000 people may have died.
Those wanting to help will now be able to donate money for the victims via Rotary clubs around the county.
In Market Drayton, Rotarians, in conjunction with the Lions Club, will be holding collections. A stall was put up in the town's weekly market yesterday and will be back Wednesday.
The town's Morrisons is also allowing a tent to be put up for collections tomorrow and Saturday.
Telford's four Rotary clubs are joining forces in the town on Sunday to offer people the chance to donate money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
Bosses of Telford Shopping Centre have given the go-ahead for a collection by the clubs of Ironbridge, Telford Centre, Wellington and Wrekin, and their associated Inner Wheel clubs.
In Wem, members of the Rotary Club will be setting up collection sites around the town.
Iain McHardy, spokesman for Wem Rotary Club, said: "Wem Rotarians, in line with every other Rotary club around the globe, will be making great efforts to replace the many thousands of Rotary shelter boxes that have already been deployed or are en-route to the disaster areas."
He said a ShelterBox will be set up at the Wem Co-op supermarket and some local schools for the rest of November.
Meanwhile, a coffee morning will be held in aid of the appeal at Church Barn in Bishop's Castle on Saturday, 8am to noon.
Oswestry Rotary Club voted to finance the sending of at least one ShelterBox emergency home to support people caught up in the disaster.
Graham Moss, from the club, said its president Stuart Phillips appealed to members at their meeting on Monday.
Mr Moss said: "Members speedily and unanimously voted to finance the sending of at least one ShelterBox emergency home to support the people of the Philippines."
Members of the Rotary club of Shawbury and Mid Shropshire unanimously agreed to donate £1,000 from club funds to the typhoon appeal at their meeting on Tuesday.
"We can forward this money immediately via our Rotary district to ensure it is supporting the relief effort on the ground as quickly as possible," said club president Gareth Watkins.
"It is the best way we can help because we have an organisation with the experienced know-how to get the money there for what is necessary and urgent."
