The collision, involving a white Ford Focus and a grey Fiat Punto, happened in Wellington at the junction of Wrekin Road and Haygate Road, near to Bridge Road and Walker Street, just before 8.30am.

The women escaped serious injury but were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Chris Bevis, who works at Peter Morris Cars on Wrekin Road, said he heard the crash before looking out to see the wreckage.

"I just heard a big bang about 8.15am," he said.

"I put my head out and there was a chap there ringing the ambulance. The Fiat looked to have been turning out of Haygate Road and the Ford must have been coming down Wrekin Road.

"There looked to be a lot of damage to both cars and they were taken away on breakdown trucks."

Both of the cars had substantial damages to the front of the vehicles.

Police were on hand to divert traffic during rush hour, while the cars were recovered.

Breakdown staff helped sweep away glass and debris which lay scattered across the road.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "We received a report just before 8.30am of a collision between a white Ford Focus and a Grey Fiat Punto at the junction of Haygate Road and Wrekin Road in Wellington.

"Both vehicles had been struck and there was quite a bit of debris. Two women involved were taken to hospital as a precaution."

Steve Parry spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance said: "One ambulance attended the scene and took patients to the Princess Royal Hospital purely for assessment."
