The console was launched worldwide at midnight and 200 queued at Telford Shopping Centre. Gamers were also out in the cold in Shrewsbury, queuing down Pride Hill.

Telford Shopping Centre opened its Southwater entrance doors just after 11pm and customers lined the corridors to get their hands on the £429 gadget.

First in line was 31-year-old Stephen Cadden from Brookside. He said: "I've been playing on Xbox since 2001. I have been looking forward to this release for years, since the first rumours that engineers were working on designing a new console. I pre ordered mine as soon as they became available to order in May.

"I feel lucky to be here and to be the first person in Telford to get it. I have spent more than £600 on the console and games, but the amount of effort that Microsoft have put into this makes it the gaming platform of choice."

Mikey Brown, 18, from Dawley, was second in line. He said: "Getting it tomorrow just wouldn't be the same. I pre-ordered in August and have spent £550, it is money well spent."
